Eric MinnsEric Minns ~
Author, Composer

Eric was born in Nassau, the Bahamas, in 1930 and attended public schools. He attended St. Matthews Anglican Church where his entertainment career began at The Peter Pan Club with comedy partner Bumpsey Pearce. ‘Bill and Sam’ performed at The Jungle Club in Fox-Hill, Silver Slipper, Ardastra Gardens, Chez Paul Meeres, Montague Hotel, and church halls. Eric became singing emcee at Paul Meere’s Club when Sam left.
He moved to Canada in 1950 and worked at various jobs before he formed The Debonairs Trio which entertained in Ontario and northern United States for 26 years.
In 1974, King Eric (Gibson) his Knights recorded Fox-Hill Gal, Island Boy and several others. Eric’s music has been recorded by Ronnie Butler, Bahamen, Cyril (Dry Bread) Ferguson, Dicey Doh singers and The National Youth Choir. His music has been featured in the Walt Disney film My Father the Hero, and Kareem Mortimer’s prize-winning film Children of God.
Eric has recorded over 50 songs, written two novels, written and illustrated five joke books, and Songs of the Bahamas, a songbook, including music, chords, and lyrics to 35 of his songs.

Owen Bethel Owen Bethel ~ Director
Owen Bethel has transitioned between the fields of international finance and law, investments, films, fashion, and the family’s funeral business with a dexterity and calmness of purpose that would be considered “dizzying and puzzling” by most. Coupled with his involvement in several charitable foundations and organizations, he credits his stability and focus to his spirituality, his two daughters, Natalie and Meghan, his family and friends, his art collection, and genuine desire to help others without regard for self, i.e. a civic duty acquired from his parents.

Dr. Cleveland Williams

Dr. Cleveland Williams ~ Music Director
Professional Education – B.A. Voice and Music Education & M.A. PrairieView A& M Texas
Further vocal studies at Conservatory Of Music ‘Benedetto Marcello’ in Venice, Italy with a diploma in singing Doctorate from University of Naples, in Tourism studies.
Experience – performance as baritone with Italian Chamber Orchestra, the ‘Interpreti Veneziani’ through Italy and northern Europe
Many operatic roles for Houston Grand Opera Company, Battersea Art Centre-London, Sammy Swain’s Bahamas Command performance for HM Elizabeth II, Guilford Opera Company, Sevenoaks Opera Company, Surrey Opera Company, Riverside Opera Company in Richmond, England
Currently Ministry of Tourism – Authentically Bahamian Division, Nassau, and founding director of Nassau City Opera where he has performed, produced and directed Treesmonisha and Porgy and Bess.

Jeffrey Stirrup ~ Music Arranger and Accompanist
Music started early in Jeffrey’s life as he worked as pianist for many choirs and vocalists.
He has worked as an arranger and composer for many genres of performances, including local artists such as: Hot Chocolate, Ronnie Armbrister, Eddie Rolle, Maitland Thompson, Alan Russell, Cherrille, Elon Moxey, Funky D, Ronnie Butler, Lou Adams, Elkin Coakley and Berkley Van Bryd.
He has recorded with a number of performers including My Island Home by Gary Roberts. Tribute to Charlie Adamson recorded by Ezra Hepburn, Come to the Shop recorded by Frankie Victory & Da Pigs, Look How Dey Rushin’ recorded by Da Pigs, Pig Feet recorded by Steve & Marley and Think recorded by Turquoise.
He has served as a bass soloist with the National Youth Choir and University of Miami Symphony Orchestra.
Primarily he works as church organist and an invited guest performer at many concerts in The Bahamas, including a duo performance with Kendrick Coleby at Trinity Methodist Church.

Roderick Johnson

Roderick T. Johnson ~ Choreographer

MFA – dance history and criticism from York University, Joffrey School of Ballet, (American Dance Centre) NY
Experience – the American Festival Ballet Company, Moscow, Idaho, Les Ballet, Jazz de Montreal, Theatre Ballet of Canada, Opera Atelier Baroque Dance, Company, Toronto
Currently – dance teacher at C. I. Gibson Senior High School and prepares students for the Royal Academy of Dance Examinations.
Awards – include Canadian Arts Council, York University. E. Clement Bethel and Danza awards for choreography
Recent other work – Choreographies in Jakarta and Surabaya, Indonesia to all ages and levels of ballet, modern dance, choreographed Which Way is Up in Trinidad & Tobago, and is working on a Catch Me if You Can piece.

Lisa Boyer Bain

Lisa Bain ~ Assistant to the director
Lisa Bain has extensive experience with operations in the workplace. She has also held the positions of Vice-President and President for The Association of Bahamians in Canada based in Toronto, Ontario. Ms. Bain’s repertoire includes public relations, cultural collaborations and numerous volunteer activities. After living abroad for 25 years, Lisa has returned to The Bahamas to re-establish herself in the community, the place she truly calls “home”. She is a living example of our production Island Boy the musical.

Brynda Knowles

Brynda Knowles ~ Wardrobe and Costume Designer
Brynda is an award-winning Fashion Designer/ Make-up Artist Consultant and a four time Bahamian Designer of the Year recipient. A graduate of LaSalle College, Montreal, Canada, and The University of Quebec, she has travelled extensively representing The Bahamas with the Ministry of Tourism. She has won numerous awards in the theatre (DANSA Awards) for make-up and costumes, and is the proud recipient of the ZONTA Club of New Providence’s Living Legends Award in the field of Fashion in 2008. President of The Fashion Group, she is the prêt-à-porter and couture designer for Brynda’s Haute Couture.

Theatre experience – school drama, university revues, provincial amateur musicals in New Zealand – Oh, Chrysanthemum, The Boy Friend, and one film in the past 10 years.
Comments – delighted to be guided by such a professional group of directors and the community of other participants.

Diana Hamilton

Diana Hamilton ~ Patsy
Present occupation – French lecturer at College of the Bahamas, part time
Theatre experience – profession singer/composer career in France—one album A Bahamian in Paris.
Comments – wonderful to be in a play that highlights the Bahamian way of life and that raises serious questions about where we’re going. I have always dreamed of being in a musical with a great cast.

Richard T. Johnson

Present occupation – self-employed
Drama experience – church choir, sang with The Blue Hill Quartet, been in a number of Blue Hill Church choir concerts.
Comments – It is a pleasure to be in a production by a legendary musician and prolific songwriter.

Rudy Levarity

Rudy Levarity ~ Uncle Harold
Theatre/film experience – Shylock in Merchant of Venice, Preacher in Playing with God, Landlord in Landlord (Mr. Miller), Soldier Play, Rev. Peter Swaby in A Foretaste of Glory Divine. The following film roles – Coakley in Eye of the Dolphin, Nathan (homeless man) in Nathan, Bar Patron in Positive ID. Commericals include Quality Home Center, BTC High Speed Internet, Family Guardian Insurance.
A retired world class athlete in track and field, and radio sports talk show host.

David Dion Maycock

David Dion Maycock ~ John Williams
Theatre experience – In New York played the lead role in The History of Here directed by Lisa Leaverton. In Nassau played the lead role in the Theatre In The Park production of the one act play, Talk To Me Like The Rain and Let Me Listen, directed by Leslie Vanderpool. He has taken on lead roles in two short films, Untouchable released in 2013, and The Dates, still to be released. He has been featured in both print and video commercials for BahaMar Resort, Bank of The Bahamas, and Bahamas Telecommunications Company. David Dion has also had an extensive modeling career, walking for such notable designers as Ray Vincente and Exiles, and being featured in fashion magazines such as Fashion Avenue, New York Social, Exiles, Brutha, and NuWoman.
Comments – it has been a great experience participating in Island Boy: the musical.
The whole journey has been a learning experience for me—one that will stay with me for a very long time. This is the first time that I have had to act and sing concurrently. Consequently, I had to dig deep to bring the character of John to life, with the help of the directors.

Comments – The play evokes feelings of what life was like growing up in The Bahamas. I love the artistic creativity of making words come to life. Participating in Island Boy makes me proud. I feel honoured to work with such an icon as Eric Minns and with professionals such as Owen Bethel, Cleveland Williams, Roderick Johnson, Jeffrey Stirrup, and Lisa Bain, and the enthusiastically talented cast.

Valicia Rolle

Valicia is an educator at a senior high school in Nassau, Bahamas.
She has participated in previous stage productions of Playing with God in 2013, Trapped in 2013, and Shakespeare in Paradise in 2012.

Shandera Sands

Shandera Sands ~ Mrs. Williams
Present occupation – Cosmetologist
Drama experience – Shandera sang with the Bahamas National Youth Choir for five years, and is currently a member of the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church Choir. She also performed in the stage production of Playing with God – Church Hypocrites
Comments – I am so grateful to be a part of the musical drama Island Boy – the musical. I love singing and acting. It allows me to express myself in many different ways. This drama is so fun. I love the way it transitions from happy to sad; it’s so rewarding and everyone can relate to it. The whole experience for me was very liberating. I’m honoured to be a part of such a well put together drama that was written by Eric Minns, of whom I am a huge fan.
